Raised in a family brimming with creative talent spanning across sculptures, painters, poets, and potters, art was ingrained in my DNA from the start. As a child, I found solace and inspiration in drawing, immersing myself in the art world alongside my grandparents. At the tender age of nine, I landed my first real job—creating the logo for my Kura Kaupapa, a design still in use to this day. That early foray into design ignited a passion that continues to shape my career journey.

After school, I pursued further education at Otago University, where I initially studied dance and arts for a year. However, my thirst for hands-on creativity led me to Polytechnic, where I delved into various forms of art. There, I studied textiles and design, exploring photography and fashion design along the way. Despite the array of disciplines I encountered, I still found myself unsure of my path - yet, one thing remained my creativity.

My journey led me to collaborate closely with creatives and artists, recognising the rich tapestry of stories woven into their work. As I delved deeper into this world, I discovered my passion lay not in creating new designs, but in amplifying the voices of these talented individuals. That realisation gave life to Inspiring Design & Co—a creative studio born to spotlight the stories behind the brand. What began with styling events, wardrobes, and homes has evolved into building timeless brands and websites that reflect the heart of the people behind them. At Inspiring Design , we don’t just create visuals—we bring your story to life, so it feels just as good as it looks.

Real Talk for New Creatives

What’s one piece of advice you’d share with someone just starting out? - Just start. Don't overthink the processes of how, what, and why - just do and figure it out along the way. Otherwise, you'll never start. And remember, consistency will always win

What I Wish I Knew

I used to think I had to do everything myself—design, admin, bookkeeping, all of it. But I quickly learned that if something isn’t your strength, and you don’t want to learn it, it’s smarter to just pay someone who knows what they’re doing. Outsourcing things like bookkeeping gave me time and energy back to focus on what I’m actually here for - creating.

My Creative Game-Changer

Showing up—regardless of whether I have clients or not, and consistency in presence has been crucial. Additionally, embracing tools like Canva for design, and platforms for scheduling and communication, has streamlined operations. But above all, building genuine relationships and being present in my community has been the most impactful strategy.

The Legacy I’m Building

I hope when people think about my legacy they remember the energy - the wild ideas, the endless talking, the passion for creativity. Sure, maybe they'll say, "She talked too much," but I also want them to say, "She made me believe I could do it too." My business isn't just about pretty designs; it's about showing up, staying consistent, and helping others realise their ideas are valid - and that their creative spark matters.

Looking Forward

My vision for the future is clear: to inspire others to pursue their dreams, particularly in the realm of design. If I can influence, encourage, and assist them along their journey, I would consider it an honor. We're launching exciting programs to teach web design, steering our company into an era of inspiration and education. Additionally, we aim to collaborate with local schools, imparting the basics of design and drawing, and illustrating how artistic passion can blossom into a fulfilling career.
